* Born locally, John Victor Halberg was raised on Lake Crescent. He rowed for the UW Huskies in the late 50s and later coached Freshman Crew at UC Berkeley. He founded the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association after he returned to the Olympic Peninsula to raise his family. His vision was to provide rowing opportunities for local youth. After a year of discussion between John, Dennis Miller and Jean Heessels-Petit, John loaned SBYC one of OPRA’s Odyssey Quads and jointly sponsored a ‘learn to row’ event. That was the beginning of our adult rowing program. SBYC later purchased that quad and it is named for him. John died in January of 2017, but his vision is still alive. To honor his support, generosity and visionary spirit, this award was established by Bob and Kelly Macaulay in 2017.

The initial recipients, for whom the award is named, were instrumental in the development of the YC over decades. Bill (43yrs) and Annette Kuss (34yrs) were our last charter members and Jack and Nancy Day (38yrs) were our longest dues paying members. *The annual sportsmanship award is named for long time SBYC member Mickey McGuffin. It is given to honor those who participate in club activities with the gracious spirit Mickey exemplified during his last year of life. When Mickey was physically unable to sail due to the onset of ALS, he encouraged others to sail his boat in the Duck Dodge races. He always came to the post-race potluck to share in the tale of the race and continued to love good sportsmanship even when he himself could not be on the water. The award is intended to recognize club members who support club activities and the participation of others with this spirit of selflessness.
